Banana Dump Cake? Is that a Thing?

You guys can count on my honesty. I feel like I’ve been trying to find out what to do with overripe bananas for half my life. Though I rarely finish them all, I buy them every week.

I knew that tonight before they went bad, I had to bake something with my most recent batch of bananas.

Yes, I have cooked a lot of recipes with bananas in the past. I’ve baked everything, including cakes, cookies, and muffins.

But tonight? I had this crazy notion that I would like to use bananas to make a dump cake.

What is a dump cake?

Dump cakes have a texture and flavor similar to cobblers. Typically, you start by dumping canned fruit, such as peaches, or pie filling into a 9 by 13-inch pan.

After that, you just pour a dry cake mix (yellow or white) over top to form the cobbler top. Next, you place butter slices on top of the entire thing and bake it till it turns brown and delicious.

I knew I would need more liquid because this time I wasn’t starting with a can of pie filling or fruit.

I debated using sweetened condensed milk, but in the end, I decided it would overpower the Banana dump cake’s sweetness and stickiness.

My choice was evaporated milk. I finished one whole cup of it. I also decided to add some pecans and cinnamon sugar. My goal was for this Banana Dump Cake to resemble my recipe for Banana Bread.

Let’s get started; I know you’re going to love it!

How to Make Easy Banana Dump Cake with Pecans

You guys, this was so freaking simple to build! It can be quickly prepared by you.

Set your oven’s temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grease a 9 x 13-inch pan with butter (or spritz it with cooking spray). I used my new Pioneer Woman baking plate of choice. Its grip-friendly handles are a great feature that makes it appealing to me.

Cut the ripe bananas into slices and distribute them evenly on the buttered plate.

Arrange a cup of finely chopped nuts on top of the banana slices.

Dredge three tablespoons of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over top of the layer of pecans and Banana Dump Cake.

Transfer a cup of evaporated milk to the mixture.

Top the other ingredients with the entire box of white cake mix.

Over the top of the Banana Dump Cake mix, scatter the remaining tablespoon of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Add slices of cold butter, not room temperature.

Place in a preheated 350°F oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until baked through and golden.

Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool.

Using a large spoon, transfer to different bowls.

If preferred, serve with ice cream or whipped cream. I poured some caramel sauce over mine to enhance the flavor even further. (Yum!)

The remaining food should be refrigerated for no more than three days. Freezing this dessert is not advised.

Variations on this Easy Dessert Recipes

Here are some things I’m hoping to try:

Coconut: Coconuts and bananas go hand in hand! The next time, I’ll replace the evaporated milk with a cup of coconut cream, or coconut milk. To toast the coconut as the Banana Dump Cake bakes, I’ll sprinkle a half cup of coconut over the butter slices and a cup of coconut over the bananas.

Peanut Butter: Melt some peanut butter and sprinkle it over the top of your dish in place of the caramel.

I’m a huge fan of banana berries. I’ll probably replace the pecans if I add berries, either blackberries or blueberries. If I add berries, I won’t add the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Chips made of chocolate: delicious. Chocolate chips and pecans sound like a great combination. If I included chocolate, I would omit the cinnamon sugar.

Chocolate Cake Mix: Why not? Use chocolate cake instead of white. Just skip the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Vanilla Pudding: Instead of using evaporated milk, you can prepare a package of vanilla pudding. You will then have a Banana Pudding Dump Cake in true form.

Favorite toppings for banana splits: To finish off this decadent dessert, add crushed pineapple, chocolate syrup, or strawberry puree. It will seem to you like a banana split. Remember to top it up with a generous dollop of vanilla ice cream! How about a dish inspired by an ice cream sundae?

Strawberry Cake Mix: Instead of using the cinnamon sugar mixture, use a box of strawberry cake mix instead of white cake. (You can garnish with pineapple and chocolate syrup.)

Make this recipe your own by adding your creative touches. It’s an excellent base for a wide range of flavors!
